What's the difference between an expert and a thought leader?

It sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but the fact is not all subject matter experts are, or can be, thought leaders.

True thought leaders combine a solid grounding in technical or industry expertise with a strong personal voice, clear position or stance, and an ability to guide and influence others.

They drive conversations, they set trends, they challenge norms and they present new ideas. Sometimes they're controversial. Sometimes they're inspiring. Sometimes they're a bit of both.

It takes guts to be a thought leader. It means sticking your neck out in defence of your opinion and backing it up with your experience and knowledge. It means entering conversations and being prepared to be challenged.

But it can also build your following, increase your influence and grow interest in your business. It can put you on the map and make you a sought-after commentator. It can position you for progress or make you a more attractive hire.

Who comes to mind when you think of thought leaders in your industry? If you can't name any...could it be you?
